The Intercultural Institute Timisoara (IIT) is an autonomous non-governmental non-profit organization, having a cultural, civic and scientific activity, without political purposes, which accepts and promotes the values and principles of the Council of Europe regarding interculturality. IIT was created in 1992, with the support of the local authorities of Timisoara and of the Council of Europe. Through its programs and activities, IIT aims to develop the intercultural dimension in the fields of education, culture and civil society. IIT also promotes the climate of tolerance and interethnic communication which characterizes the city of Timisoara and the region of Banat.

The activities of IIT focus on the following main areas: intercultural education and education for a democratic citizenship; the promotion of harmonious interethnic and intercultural relations in Romania and the fight against discrimination; support for Roma communities; the promotion of intercultural research in Romania; regional and cross-border cooperation in South-Eastern Europe; the promotion of cultural strategies and policies based on partnerships between the authorities and the civil society and on the respect for cultural diversity; European integration and Romania’s accession to EU. These activities address mainly to teachers, young people, public servants, members of non-governmental organizations and of the national minorities and are integrated within local, regional, national and international projects.
